To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week (6-12 February 2023) we sat down with our Junior Social Media Executive and Digital Marketing Apprentice, Rhianne, to find out all about her experiences finding an apprenticeship, getting started and her highlights so far!

What made you choose an apprenticeship?

Upon finishing school, I decided to continue studying Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at A-Level. I then secured a place to study Physics with Astrophysics at university but later realised university wasn’t the right option for me.

In early 2021 I opened a small online business and developed a passion for content creation. Several months later I started a role as a Marketing Assistant and consequently decided to pursue a digital marketing apprenticeship to expand my knowledge whilst still gaining work experience.

What was the process like in finding an apprenticeship?

It was fairly straightforward and mostly required me regularly checking gov.uk to see if there were any apprenticeships of interest to me. After applying to my current role, I got in contact with a lovely Apprenticeship Recruitment Advisor from Kirklees College who then helped me through the process and interviews.

How are you finding you find your apprenticeship, both the work and college elements?

It is going well, and I am loving it. It has given me the opportunity to develop many skills and learn new ones!

I’m currently about halfway through my course and am enjoying the range of things I’m getting to learn on my college days.

What does a typical week look like as an apprentice?

Wednesdays are my college day, which generally involve a lesson and working on assignments and/or projects. For example, I have just completed a project which focused on SEO research and during my lessons recently we have been learning and practising coding.

The rest of the week is with Faith doing a range of activities like:

  • Creating social media content
  • Designing graphics
  • Scheduling all our clients’ socials
  • Uploading and updating website content
  • Creating/building email newsletters

What has been the highlight of your apprenticeship so far?

Definitely being able to apply the things I am learning; it massively helps solidify my understanding. I’ve also loved being able to create content for TikTok

What would you like to do after your apprenticeship?

I hope to continue pursuing and developing my career in social media marketing.

What advice would you give someone considering an apprenticeship?

Go for it! It is an amazing opportunity and there are a range of apprenticeships within different industries that allow you to learn and put your skills into practice.

What skills have you learnt from your apprenticeship?

My love for graphic design has been reignited and it’s been rewarding seeing my design skills gradually improve. In addition, my knowledge of SEO and email marketing have certainly grown.
