Writer’s block is something we all experience from time to time – and we know how frustrating it can be (especially when working to a deadline!). Many things can contribute to this, such as lacking inspiration, if you’ve had a stressful day, or you’re simply being distracted by other work. Whatever the cause is, feeling like you’ve hit a road block can slow down your productivity.
TIPS TO HELP YOU CONQUER WRITER’S BLOCK
TAKE A STEP BACK
While some find meditation helpful with beating writer’s block, we don’t all have time in our busy schedules to do so. Taking a step back to focus on another task for a while can help you find your writing inspiration. Staring at the same piece of work and getting stressed about it can cause you to block up even more, so close that screen down and work on something else for an hour or so, and then revisit the problem piece with fresh eyes.
REFOCUS YOUR MIND
Many of us have a myriad of projects on the go, this can mean your desk is cluttered and your mind is trying to do too many things. Close all your other tabs and remove any other distractions from your desk. This will allow you to keep your focus on one thing at once. Without the intrusion from other projects, you may find the focus you need to complete your work.
JUST WRITE
‘Freewriting’ is a great technique to get your creative juices flowing. Usually the hardest part of conquering writer’s block is getting started, so just start writing – it’s that simple. It doesn’t have to be on the topic in question to start with, but once you’ve ‘put pen to paper’, it can open up your creative through process and your writing will flow from there.
TALK IT OVER
Discussing ideas with colleagues (or even a friend!) can really help when searching for writing inspiration. They may have a different perspective that hadn’t been considered beforehand. Sometimes, working on something for so long, you can get too close to the information and can’t see the bigger picture. Chatting about ideas will help stimulate the mind and open you up to new angles.
GET THE CREATIVE JUICES FLOWING
Some people may work better in complete silence, but as humans, we’re motivated by stimulating music. Change the radio station or open your favourite online music streaming service, and put on something to get those creative juices flowing. Whether you’re a fan of classical, charts or country – you’ll soon see a spike in productivity.
GET ORGANISED
Splitting your work into segments can really help you to get started. If you have a mammoth amount of information to get through, try dividing it into smaller portions, setting time frames for each one. This will allow you to focus on writing each segment individually, making the task more manageable and helping to reduce the overwhelming feeling that may be blocking your writing.
TAKE A SCREEN BREAK
If you’re sat at your desk and your writing has become stagnant you can start to feel overwhelmed, taking five minutes to have a quick walk, or just stepping outside for some fresh air can help you refocus on the task at hand, providing the writing inspiration you’ve been looking for.
WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?
Remind yourself why you’re writing, is it to help a client? For your own blog? Remind yourself of the reason why you’re writing and focus on that, anything else is a distraction. Going back to the start can really help to focus your mind and get you started.
