A local energy initiative is celebrating three years of reducing energy bills and lowering energy consumption for organisations across Calderdale this month, including two local historic landmarks.
Established in October 2015, 6C is an exclusive energy-buying consortium designed to help local businesses and organisations reduce their energy overheads.
The initiative is operated by energy management experts Kinect Energy Group in partnership with Calderdale Council and has so far partnered with more than 60 businesses and organisations across all sectors, including iconic local landmarks The Piece Hall and Dean Clough Mills.
By combining the buying power of businesses and public services within Calderdale, 6C can purchase directly from energy companies, and use their position within the market to help provide businesses with the most competitive prices.
Kinect Energy Group’s partnerships manager, Caroline Jamieson is urging businesses in Calderdale to be more energy aware, as ongoing international issues may impact energy prices going into 2019.
Caroline explains: “Business throughout the UK have seen energy costs rise by up to 40% since 2016, and the wholesale markets are predicted to remain volatile into the winter period with talks of oil reaching $100 a barrel.
“The extended heatwave this Summer saw electricity demand peak, predominantly due to geopolitical tensions and uncertainty around oil production cuts and Brexit. The lack of LNG tankers and tight UK gas supplies also means that premiums are being built in by suppliers to protect themselves, should we experience a similar winter period to last year.
“2019 is looking like it will present many challenges, and it is becoming ever more critical for businesses to ensure their energy is being managed the right way.
“6C’s forward purchasing and proactive approach to energy management has helped many across Calderdale guard against the increases. We constantly monitor the market to help mitigate against cost increases and our transparent and honest approach to our customers helps provide the best product and service for our members.
“As we mark three years of serving businesses and organisations throughout Calderdale, we’re inviting those who aren’t on board to join the growing collection of companies already enjoying the benefits.”
Cllr Barry Collins, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Strategy, added:
“The success of the 6C energy scheme over the last three years has been very encouraging, and we’re really pleased that Calderdale organisations have been able to cut their energy costs as a result. Reducing carbon emissions across the borough is a priority for the Council. Everyone can play their part in this, so we urge local organisations to sign up to the scheme.”
