As the countdown to your time-off begins, one thing to make sure you remember to check off your ‘to do’ list is your out of office (OOO) message.
There’s not often a lot of thought put into it – surely as long as you let people know you’re away from your desk and when you’ll be back, that’s all that counts?
However, with a little thought and planning, let’s collectively add some life back into these dreary messages. Here’s some corkers below, and you never know, it might give you some inspiration – even if it is just for people in the same organisation!
6 FUNNY OUT OF OFFICE MESSAGES
BRINGING BACK THE 80S
“Never gonna give you up, Never gonna let you down, Never gonna run around and desert you, Never gonna make you cry, Never gonna say goodbye, Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.
I’m also never gonna reply to your message until 9th August as I’m off on holiday.”
Why we like it: There’s nothing wrong with adding a little humour to your OOO message, and what better way to do so than bringing back the 80s with this classic by Rick Astley.
“I am on annual leave until dd/mm/yyyy. I will allow each sender one email and if you send me multiple emails, I will randomly delete your emails until there is only one remaining. Choose wisely. Please note that you have already sent me one email.”
Why we like it: A simple way to reduce the high number of emails you’re more than likely to return to, while also increasing the sender’s efficiency – what’s not to like?
REFERENCING A TV SHOW
“Hi, I’m Troy McClure! You may remember me from such classic Out of Office Messages as “I’m at Outside Lands Watching Metallica” or “Visiting My Family in Florida.” I’m here today to talk to you about Paul Sokol, and the email you just sent him.
(Enter Billy, 8 years old, doe-eyed)
Billy: Mr. McClure? Why is Paul not answering any emails right now?
Troy: The answer is simple Billy: Paul is in San Diego this weekend providing support for an event and nowhere near his work email.
Billy: When is he going to be coming back?
Troy: He will be back on Monday morning.
Billy: Is he going to reply to the email they just sent?
Troy: If it warrants a response, Billy. If it warrants a response…
That’s all for now. Watch for me in the upcoming Out of Office Message “At a Wedding,” coming this winter!”
Why we like it: Who isn’t a fan of The Simpsons? We’re all familiar with Troy McClure and his signature monologue, and this is a fantastic way of adding some humour back into our inboxes.
BEING INSPIRED BY FOOD
— TOM SHARMAN ???? (@TOMSHARMANWEB) May 22, 2017
Why we like it: Yes, we like tea and crumpets, but that’s not the reason we chose to share this one. Its light-hearted approach makes it a winner for us.

Why we like it: We all deserve a break at the end of the year to do what we want, and the general mood is much more jolly over the festive period – enter the comedic out of office message. Not only does this remind people of that, we’re big fans of re-watching films over the Christmas break.
THE STAGES OF ANNUAL LEAVE

Why we like it: This is one of the most relatable tables to show the stages of annual leave that we’ve all experienced, at one time or another. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
