sustainability

Off The Grain is a Yorkshire based sustainable, artisan furniture maker, creating handmade furniture and décor for the home, directly from its workshop in the heart of West Yorkshire.

Established in 2018, by former PE teacher Dominic Walsh, Off The Grain was borne out of the simple belief that there’s something special about owning a product that has been made by hand. It’s this philosophy that underpins each and every product that leaves the workshop.

Consumer demand for more responsible products is clearer than ever, and sustainability is at the heart of Off The Grain’s business ethos. All the timber and packaging used is responsibly sourced, sustainable and recyclable, with practices approached in four key ways;

  • All timber is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), with the majority sourced either in Yorkshire or the North of England. Every piece of wood used is taken from sustainably-managed forests where four trees are planted for every one taken.
  • Throughout the production process extraction units are used to collect sawdust, which is then donated to local farms to help with the upkeep of horses and other animals.
  • None of the timber off cuts are wasted, instead, they are used to make some of the smaller products or samples. Any remaining pieces are then made into kindling and donated to help elderly people heat their homes in the region.
  • All items, when delivered are protected in transit by Eco-Fill, rather than plastic packaging chips. The biodegradable loose fit chips can be added to a compost heap or dissolved under hot water and all cardboard boxes used are made from 100% recycled materials.

Alongside its pledge to sustainability, Off The Grain has recorded a 710% increase in revenue during 2020 and has recently doubled its workshop space, relocating to an impressive new 6,000 sq ft location in West Vale, Halifax. Plans for further expansion, with the opening of a 3,000 sq ft luxury showroom, are already underway.

Commenting on the business’ dedication to sustainability, founder Dominic Walsh said: “Off The Grain started out as a personal hobby and a genuine passion for furniture making, and since launching in 2018 sustainability has always been at the heart of this.

“We have researched and implemented ways to ensure that we are operating as sustainably as possible. All our timber, cut offs and sawdust is utilised in some way to reduce our waste and our packaging is all 100% recyclable. Every member of the team is committed to improving our sustainability ambitions and we will continue this into 2021.”

Off The Grain’s made-to-order core range currently includes coat racks, shoe benches, dining tables, beds and computer desks.
