Meta’s new social media app, Threads, has been making waves since its launch last week. As a direct competitor to Twitter, the app is designed to be a more personal and private platform than Twitter, without the ad hoc restrictions, bizarre new rules, and lawless environment that can be found on Elon Musk’s platform.
But you might be wondering—is it worth getting? What are the benefits or detriments to my business branding if I do or don’t get threads? Let’s take a look at why you might want to jump on board with Threads now, even if the platform is in its infancy.
The benefits of Threads
One of the biggest advantages of Threads for businesses is that it’s tightly integrated with Instagram. This means that businesses that already have an Instagram presence can easily connect their Threads account and start sharing content with their followers—the set-up process is incredibly straightforward, and gives you an established audience base to work from.
Threads has seen a record-breaking launch day of 50 million sign-ups, so it’s a social media that has strong potential to be the next best thing. By jumping on it in its infancy, you set yourself up with the best chance of establishing a growing audience base on the platform.
What are the problems with Threads?
Threads offers a number of opportunities to establish your brand, much like any other social media platform. But that doesn’t mean it’s not without its drawbacks.
If your target audience is on Instagram, then Threads could be a good fit for you. There’s nothing to lose from establishing a Threads account now. However, if your target audience is not on Instagram, then Threads may not be the best option, as it means essentially starting from scratch via a new Instagram account.
Then there’s the fact that the platform is significantly underdeveloped right now. The dashboard has no chronological order, which many people have issue with, as well as the concern that the account can’t be deleted without deleting the attached Instagram account, as Threads is powered by Instagram. The platform hasn’t even been launched outside of the US and the UK, because of data privacy concerns in the EU that are blocking it.
So, when talking about Threads, consider this: what are your goals for using social media? If you’re looking to reach a large audience, then Twitter may still be the better option. Despite its issues, it still works, and the majority of its user base are still using the platform every day. Plus, it’s currently much harder to reach a new audience on Threads—there are no hashtags or a real search function for content, and ads also haven’t been introduced to the platform.
So, should businesses switch from Twitter to Threads?
It’s too early to say for sure, but there are a number of factors that businesses should consider before making a decision.
If you’re considering switching from Twitter to Threads, you’ll need a surefire strategy for establishing yourself in this new space. There are always opportunities that come with platform launches like this—such as trialling out a new campaign or experimental social media tone to a small audience before launching it across other platforms, without much consequence if it doesn’t go well.
