Thirsk-based Land Rover Defender specialist Twisted has given the iconic British Defender a sustainable twist by unveiling its first-ever fully electric offering.

Recent market data reveals that 2021 was a bumper year for electrified car registrations, with 27.5 per cent of the total market now electrified in some form[1]; a trend reflected in Twisted’s own data with 20 per cent[2] of enquiries relating to electric vehicles.

The Twisted EV is the culmination of thousands of hours development and is now ready for customers to experience. The EV system has been engineered from the ground up, using the highest quality only new automotive components, to ensure there is no compromise.

The Twisted EV system has also been designed to be completely modular and is available to suit all 90, 110 and 130 Defender.

The vehicle will be sold internationally, with a number of vehicles currently in build for Twisted US customers. All vehicles are ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) compliant for London drivers.

Commenting on the launch, Twisted founder Charles Fawcett said: “Twisted has an established reputation as the market leading modifier of Defender and I am excited that we have the ability to future-proof a treasured British icon.

“The fully electric Twisted has been a labour of love for the whole team, with thousands of hours invested into its development. With an estimated 70% of all Defender and Series Land Rovers ever made still being on the road, it is one of the most recyclable vehicles on the market and Twisted has now future-proofed this British icon even further.

“There is something extremely special about the Twisted EV. It has incredible power yet still the charm of the classic Defender. The eco mode effortlessly accelerates to 60 mph and, with sport mode engaged, it just pulls and pulls…it’s absolutely brilliant and incredibly fun to drive. We’re extremely pleased with the finished vehicle and the reception from customers has been phenomenal.”

The Twisted EV offers 200kms of real-world driving range, with zero impact on performance either on or off the road. It has two drive modes, sports and eco, and is powered by a high voltage 61kWh battery pack that requires less than three hours of charging time.

The batteries are located under the bonnet and between the chassis rails where the fuel tank would usually sit and, together with electric power steering, the vehicle feels and handles like a normal Defender.

Despite the pandemic, Twisted Automotive has continued to grow and develop its product offering.

The business expanded in 2021, opening showrooms in London, in the borough of Kensington, and on the other side of the Atlantic in Austin, Texas. Further expansion is planned in 2022.
