HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE SOCIAL MEDIA SUCCESS? THE NUMBER OF LIKES YOUR FACEBOOK PAGE HAS, THE NUMBER OF TWITTER FOLLOWERS YOU’VE GAINED IN A MONTH OR THE NUMBER OF TWEETS SENT?
Uncommonly, many assume the above metrics are an effective measurement method but unfortunately, there is slightly more to social media success than thousands of followers.
Remember the phrase, quality over quantity? Well, this can also be applied to your social media following.
Social media is just as much about engaging with your customers as it is about communicating your brand’s messages. Would you rather have 5,000 silent followers or 1,089 engaged followers?
Whilst obviously having lots of followers can help increase your brand awareness, it’s also important to consider what you’re gaining from your followers. Are they interested in what you have to say? Are they retweeting, liking and sharing your content? If not, it’s may be time to have a social media overhaul.
With the above in mind, here are my top tips for making Twitter work for you:
- Don’t be scared to have a ‘follower cull’. There are plenty of spam and fake accounts in the Twitter-sphere that aren’t relevant to you, go through your followers regularly and ensure your audience is the one you are wanting to communicate with.
- Get rid of the auto ‘Thank you for the following message’! Show them you’re a real person who is engaging and communicating in real time.
- Think of new followers as potential customers and aim to build lasting relationships with them. Did you know approximately 60% of people have purchased from an SME after following them on twitter?
- Actively follow relevant twitter accounts within your industry including your competitors.
- Create genuine, original content that your followers will find interesting and want to actively share.
- If you feel you’re not reaching your target audience why not consider a follower campaign and reach out to them directly.
